Another great concert overture by Felix Mendelssohn was Ruy Blas, based on the drama by Victor Hugo. Victor Hugo's Ruy Blas was a tragic play and you get the dramatic feeling brought out in Mendelssohn's overture. This stand alone piece, like Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture on yesterday's post, would be a welcome beginning of any symphony concert program. Enjoy!
