Sibelius and Smetana Honor Their Countries With Their Music

Best of the Tales:  I hope you enjoy this repeat post from the Tales archives as the Tales and the fetching Mrs.Tales enjoy a mini vacation at some secret location, never to be revealed...unless the Tales decides to post a picture on Face Book.

Sibelius and Smetana Honor Their Countries With Their Music:

Bedrich Smetana and Jean Sibelius were two great Romantic era composers; Smetana in the middle of the Romantic era and Sibelius at the end of the Romantic era.  While they hailed from two different countries, they had in common a love and pride of their homelands and both honored their countries with music that will last forever.

Bedrich Smetana  1824-1884
Bedrich Smetana was a Czech composer who became known as the father of Czech music.  His music became closely identified with his country's aspirations to independent statehood.

Smetana honored his country with a piece called Ma Vlast, meaning my fatherland or my homeland.  In it is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written, "The Moldau."  The Moldau is the Vltava River, the longest river in the Czech Republic.  This piece is one of the most beloved Romantic pieces ever composed; not just by his own countrymen but by fans of classical music everywhere.  You can hear the beautiful Moldau theme beginning at the one minute mark of the second video.

Jean Sibelius  1865-1957

The great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius showed his pride in his country with his dramatic, stirring piece, Finlandia. This late Romantic era composer piece began and ends his Finalndia with the same strength and majesty that Sibelius wanted to portray for his country.  The beautiful hymn of Finland begins at the 5:23 mark of the first video.

Is it any wonder that these two great composers were and will always be loved by their fellow countrymen.

Please turn up the volume and listen to the pride that these two men showed for their country in these two pieces written to honor their country and their fellow countrymen.
